Column #44 - October 28, 2004 |
Yee-haw, it's time for another star-spangled edition of Press Release Roundup. (Yeah, I'm a bit overfed on cowboy porn, thanks to Buckleroos.) First up, however, it was announced that the Geoffrey Karen Dior Memorial Fundraiser on October 10 raised $1,500 for local HIV/AIDS nonprofit L.A. Shanti. With a $10 door donation that means roughly 150 people were in attendance; I counted about 60, but I wasn't there for the entire three hours. Directrix Chi Chi LaRue hosted, and as usual, s/he was hilarious and a real burst of energy. I arrived at Micky's nightclub in West Hollywood in time to catch Sharon Kane warbling in a glam wig and tight minidress. She was followed by Ms. Dior's boyfriend, whose heartfelt address to the crowd unfortunately went unheard by all but those at the very foot of the stage, thanks to the usual noisy nightclub din. Gossip columnist Billy Masters of Filth2Go.com told a few jokes and sang a song, while dragstress Lana Luster (looking terrific) took a seat to somberly relate how Karen Dior "invented" Ms. Luster's drag persona way back in 1990 and then sang a mournful dirge. Ms. LaRue then took the stage, thanked Ms. Luster and proceeded to tell scandalously raunchy anecdotes about Ms. Dior to boost the mood of the room. She bellowed into the microphone and cracked, "Who's next in this cavalcade of cheer?" Another drag performer, The Fabulous Phyllis, took the stage and related how she, too, was given her essential persona by Karen Dior. The highlight of the evening for me was songbird Irene Soderbergh's full-throated, barn-busting medley of Happy Days Are Here Again/(Come On) Get Happy that was loud enough to shush the noisy Sunday evening drinkers into paying attention. As she intro'ed Ms. Soderbergh, Chi Chi LaRue hilariously related how she initially mistook Ms. Soderbergh for a "tiny, adorable little drag queen," when, in fact, she is a biological woman who, in Ms. LaRue's words, "is impersonating a drag queen." Ms. Soderbergh gave as good as she got and cheerfully thanked Ms. LaRue for being "such a big, fabulous bitch." Among the crowd: event organizers Marshall O Boy and Will Clark; reviewers Leo Buck, John Rex and Mickey Skee; performers Andrew Addams, Bastian, Brad Benton, Wes Daniels and Hank Hightower (that pair is a blast from the past, eh?), Rik Jammer, Michael Knight, Kevin Kramer, Gus Mattox, Dino Philips, Steven Richards, Rob Romoni, Jack Ryan, David Thompson and Bret Wolfe; directors Derek Kent, Steven Scarborough and Jim Steel; photographers Mick Hicks and Greg Lenzman; singer Richard Halpern; Video 10's Freddie Bercovitz; Cybersocket publisher Morgan Summers (who appeared as "Morgan Allen" in a number of Dior flicks back in the day); Jet Set's Brett Drysdale; and L.A. Shanti's executive director Cleve Jones. PRESS RELEASE ROUNDUP Pacific Sun Entertainment has director Paul Baressi's American Bears pending on VHS/DVD. "It is 'Ship Ahoy' and 'Anchor's Away' [sic] in director Paul Baressi's latest tribute to the military," reads the release. "When these big, burly, beefy bears pull into port, they don't just drop anchor... they drop trou!" There are even more nautically themed porn puns at Pacificsunentertainment.com. Hot House Entertainment and online hookup site ManHunt.net have teamed up for Manhunt: The Movie, a coventure they are billing as "a first for any such movie in porn history." I'm not sure that's accurate, but it is a clever notion nonetheless. Hot House hottie Dick Wolf (last year's "Adams Report" winner for Best Newcomer, I might add) is featured. Cleverly, each of the film's 11 models have their own ManHunt.net username (Dick Wolf is "musclpup" for instance, while Arpad Miklos is "HUNGarianTop"), and "the five scenes are set up with animations of users in cyberspace scoping each other out online," per the press release. Hot House's creative director Brent Smith, art director Michael "Roma" Williams and studio President Steven Scarborough made sure to include a coupon inside each DVD good for a month's free membership to ManHunt.net. The project originated when, says Mr. Scarborough, "we put an ad up on ManHunt asking members to tell us about their hottest ManHunt hookups. What we've produced is a real-life look at what's going on around the country 24 hours a day. The era of waiting until night to meet a trick in a bar is kind of over now." Manhunt: The Movie is available now at Hothouse.com with a November release to video stores planned. It's a smart marketing hook for the studio, which is on a bit of a roll this year following its nationwide talent search for a costar to clash with Aiden Shaw in the recently released Perfect Fit. Kristofer Weston, Colt Studio's marketing director, has been working his fingers down to the nub getting word out on Buckleroos, its big-budget Western epic on the Buckshots line. Go to Buckleroos.com for all the scoop. The latest round of PR includes a pair of personal appearances in Toronto and New York City for Buckleroos cast members Owen Hawk, Dean Phoenix and Zak Spears. This follows a San Francisco appearance for the trio in September. Then Toronto venues Priape and Woody's, Sept. 23 (Priape.com and Woodystoronto.com), and in NYC at SBNY (Splashbar.com), followed by an appearance on Sirius OutQ Satellite Radio's Derek and Romaine Show (Siriusoutq.com). Constant readers know performer Aaron Tanner has been busily event-organizing in the Big Apple. One recent event included bringing in illustrator Glen Hanson to sign his new book of "hot, erotic male images" titled GMAN at club XL. Mr. Hanson is one of the cocreators of the "Chelsea Boys" gay-oriented syndicated comic strip. The event Mr. Tanner organized included "hot men dressed in costumes inspired [by Hanson's] images!" And it was free, too. Go to Aarontanner.com for details on this and other upcoming events. Mr. Hanson is online at Glenhanson.com. To refresh your memory, Mr. Tanner has appeared in a raft of sexflicks, including Chi Chi LaRue's Shock two-parter (Falcon Studios, 2000); Raging Stallion's Fist Pack 1, Sex Pack 9: Fire in the Hole, Sex Pack 10: This End Up and The Dirty Director (all in 2002); and Titan Media's Woodsmen (2001). Falcon's promotions/events manager Troy Prickett announced a pair of exclusive newcomer studs: Roman Heart and Erik Rhodes. Both recently completed their debut feature Super Soaked for directrix Chi Chi LaRue. Roman Heart (now that's a romantic stage name) pairs off with Brent Everett in Super Soaked with two more films planned, including Heaven to Hell, Falcon's upcoming all-exclusive epic. Mr. Heart is brunet and tanned, with a tightly packed physique and a Pepsodent smile. Erik Rhodes is a 6'3" buzzcut drink of water, with a lantern jaw and a brawny rugby-player's body. He's got that naughty fratboy look Falcon likes so much. Super Soaked is set for a March 2005 release. Go to Falconstudios.com for more information. Porn Star Birthdays from October 18 through October 24: Mac Bourbon, Marcus Iron, Eric Lenn, Beau Lyons, Nick Riley, Pierce Vendetta (October 18); Dan Brewer, Roland Dane, Blake Harper, Johnny Kfir, Erik Ludwig, Antonio Vega (October 19); Jeff Daniels, Bruno Diaz, Danny Fraser, Andrei Nemov, Frank Sterling, Jake Taylor (October 20); Rem Giovanni, Buck Meadows, Joe Russell, Joey Russo (October 21); Kyle Bradford, Chaz Carlton, Alain Medio, Sereen, Troy Steele, Mitchell Stevens (October 22); Brian Daniels, Eddie Gomez, Lex Kitau, Cole Tucker (October 23); David Anthony, Scot Craven, Chad Knight, Jack Murphy, Tristen (October 24). |
